Androgenetic
Alopecia (AGA) is the most common cause of
hair loss Current research
shows that the balding scalp contains miniaturized
hair follicles
and increased amounts of dihydrotestosterone
(DHT) compared to a hairy scalp. This
suggests the presence of DHT in the scalp
tissue causes AGA. DHT causes
a gradual, progressive shrinkage in the length
and caliber of hair follicles.
Consequently,
each succeeding hair cycle results in production
of smaller, finer hairs. Natural hair
growth is also prevented when secretions,
dirt, dead skin cells and oil form
a sebum plug in the opening of the hair follicle.
This also "turns off" the circulation to the
follicle, causing it to become dormant.
